Esteban Celis, M.D., Ph.D. comes to the Georgia Cancer Center from the Immunology Department at Moffitt Cancer Center with research interests in the fields of tumor immunobiology and immune-based therapies for cancer.  Dr. Celis received his M.D., MSc, and Ph.D. degrees from the National University of Mexico and was selected by the NIH to be a prestigious Fogarty International Fellow, completing postdoctoral training at the Center for Cancer Research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Dr. Celis has extensive experience in both industry and academia.  He has received two NIH Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants — one for treating prostate cancer and the other for treating Hepatitis B Virus Infection.  Dr. Celis has also been issued 12 US patents, with 135 patents and patent applications worldwide.  Prior to Moffitt, Dr. Celis was a Department of Pediatrics Professor and Member of the Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center when hurricane Katrina necessitated relocation.  He was also previously a Professor in the Department of Immunology at Mayo Clinic, where he initiated three clinical trials using peptide-based vaccines for various types of cancer.  While at Mayo, Dr. Celis also received approval for one IND to the FDA for a peptide vaccine trial.  Dr. Celis is a sought-after international speaker who has maintained NIH R01 funding since 1999, currently with two active R01 grants and 164 publications.
